As American’s what are we entitled? I’m hearing so much about entitlement this and entitlement that for just about everything under the sun. But the question I keep asking myself is, what am I entitled to? What should I expect from my government? I have been on the receiving end of entitlements in my earlier years. My family received money from the earned income credit and vouchers from the WIC program. The WIC program was a life saver at the time. The earned income credit we could have done without because the money ultimately was spent on stuff otherwise wasted on things that we didn’t need. Early in my life I expected the government to provide assistance for my family because I didn’t have an education above high school and job prospect was McDonald’s. I knew I didn’t want to stay in that situation but I needed help. I entered the military and after 2 weeks of a 4 year enlistment I had quickly decided that the military was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. In the military I got my 2 year Associates Degree and when I got out of the military I used the GI Bill to finish off my 4 year B.S. degree. I owe a lot to the military for providing the drive to get that done. Now I’m doing well and don’t feel that I’m entitled too much from the government except for three things. First, I think the politicians that represent the American people should be pushing for equality for all Americans and not giving groups of people special privileges because of religion, race, sex, or nationality at birth. Secondly, the politicians should be held to the same standard as every American. Thirdly, the politicians to be treated like everyday Americans once they end there service. No pensions, no body guards, and no special privileges once they have finished their service. Being a public official should be treated as a service to the country and not as a career. If you have been in an office more than 8 years then it’s time to move to another office or get out and be a member of society.
